Science News Explores

Science news

Founded in 2003, Science news delivers topical coverage of new developments in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to kids 9 and up, their parents and educators. It is part of the Science News Media Group and a program of the Society for Science, a 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to supporting and inspiring science learning both inside and outside of classrooms. Science News Explores reports on all aspects of science through its shorter news stories and longer, more comprehensive features written with vocabulary and sentence structure that is appropriate for readers 9 and up.

Getting a story ready for publication takes an entire staff: at least one content editor sees every piece before it’s published. Art directors choose and edit photos, videos and infographics that accompany the articles. Web production puts them online and comes up with posts for Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. Educators rely on Science News Explores to help them fill gaps in their students’ STEM literacy. To support this effort, most online stories feature a glossary of terms — called Power Words — and teachers can find extra materials to aid in classroom use through our Teacher’s Guides.

Science News Explores is produced by a team of journalists who have PhDs or equivalent experience in the areas they report on. Their work is guided by the Society for Science’s journalistic standards and policies, outlined in depth here. The Society also runs world-class science-education competitions for youth, including the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the International Science and Engineering Fair and the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.
