The geopolitical dynamics in Southeast Asia post-pandemic have experienced significant changes influenced by various factors, including the rise of China, US-China tensions, and shifts in the policies of countries in the region. Countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines are taking center stage in this dynamic, adapting to newly emerging challenges and opportunities. One important aspect of this dynamic is China’s increasing economic influence in the region. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) strengthens China’s relations with Southeast Asian countries through massive infrastructure investment. Vietnam, for example, has received large investments in the transportation and energy sectors from China, which has increased its competitiveness in the global market. However, this also raises concerns regarding economic dependence which could limit the independence of these countries. On the other hand, tensions between the United States and China have triggered Southeast Asian countries to balance their relations with these two powers. The US is intensifying strategic partnerships with countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines to counter Chinese influence. Joint military exercises and increased cooperation in the security sector are the main highlights. For example, the “Balikatan” military exercise between the US and the Philippines shows new tensions developing in the South China Sea. In a security context, the South China Sea issue remains an important conflict issue. Competing territorial claims between China and several countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines create tensions that could impact regional stability. Multilateral efforts, such as ASEAN meetings, play an important role in mediation and diplomacy to reduce the potential for conflict. Domestic politics also influences geopolitical dynamics in the region. The health crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses in the health and economic systems of Southeast Asian countries. Indonesia, as the country with the largest population, faces challenges in post-pandemic recovery that could trigger foreign policy changes. The occurrence of natural disasters such as floods also forces governments to adapt to environmental issues, which are increasingly linked to geopolitics. In addition, there is a shift in the security paradigm, where countries are starting to pay attention to non-traditional issues, including climate change and cybersecurity. Countries such as Thailand and Singapore are active in developing policies to deal with these threats, demonstrating that security is not only limited to military aspects, but also includes social and environmental aspects. Collaboration in the economic field is also increasing, with ASEAN’s role as an important platform for economic integration. The digital economy and free trade are in focus, with countries having to adapt quickly to take advantage of existing opportunities. Digitalization accelerates post-pandemic economic growth, but also raises new challenges related to inequality and access to technology. All these dynamics show that Southeast Asia, although faced with great challenges, has the potential to grow and adapt in the face of global change. Through cooperation and diplomacy, countries in the region are trying to create a stable, safe and sustainable ecosystem. The journey ahead will measure the extent to which Southeast Asian countries can manage these challenges in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
