Humanitarian News

Humanitarian news is about people who are in urgent need of life-saving support and relief. It’s about how governments, businesses and grassroots donors help those caught up in crisis. It’s about how the world responds to global challenges like famine and conflict. And it’s about how journalists cover these stories and their impact.

More than 22 months of conflict in Gaza has left the population of the territory facing record levels of hunger and malnutrition. Markets are empty, food stocks have run out, and medical facilities are overwhelmed with a surge of patients with severe watery diarrhoea and other illnesses.

Thousands of civilians are still trapped inside Gaza, and the humanitarian crisis is worsening daily. Civilians seeking aid from outside groups face threats, harassment and even gunfire from Hamas operatives. This is a clear violation of international law.

Sudan’s two-year war is the largest and fastest-growing displacement crisis in the world. Violence has devastated the country’s health system, causing life-threatening food insecurity and driving up prices for staple foods. And more than 24 million people are in urgent need of life-saving assistance, including shelter and nutrition support.

UNHCR provides emergency and life-saving support to the most vulnerable, including displaced people and families in host communities. It has participated in more than 190 humanitarian convoys to deliver essential supplies, supported more than 300,000 people with psychosocial support and repaired over 37,000 homes damaged by the fighting. UNHCR also helps reintegrate returnees to their villages, towns and cities.
